Hello, After a good induction I leave learners with a knowledge only unit to complete, just make sure it's the 'easiest' one and that they have the knowledge to cover it, they should if you've chosen the right unit and they have completed their Induction in workplace, which they should have. Then on first visit do really good holistic observation. Then, judging on quality of the unit they should have completed you can either give them another knowledge only unit to complete or set them work based on knowledge parts of one or two of units you have covered with obs. You will notice there are a lot of 'shoulds' in this, in reality they probably wont do it, wont have had a proper Induction in workplace and expect you to do most of the work! I give learners copies of the standards with the performance parts circled, tell them those parts will be covered in observations, the rest they will be expected to provide information on, either in question and answer sessions, (use a voice recorder) or by them providing written evidence.
