Hi all

Due to the changes at CQC with the new essential standards of quality and safety, I am finding it hard to get some guidance on Medication observation. These are not for NVQ purposes, but for supervisions how many medication observations should a dom care company do with their staff each year and where can this guidance be found.

Thanks in advance.

There is no definitive guidance on this but the following might assist;
New staff should be observed as often as necessary to ascertain their competence and to ensure they are confident in the role.
Existing staff should be observed as part of the normal spot check routine and amend your spot check form to evidence medication for inspection purposes and demonstrate compliance
with outcome 9 ( management of medicines ). As part of supervisions medication should have a separate topic heading so that staff have an opportunity to flag up any issues or training needs. Hope this helps
