Hello, Wish you the best of luck with what you're trying there. For all the talk about person centred planning it rarely truly happens and I can quite understand that in a lot of larger residential homes it is nigh on impossible or practical to fully embrace the model. However, I go to a lot of homes where residents are simply not even given the chance to do something like make a cup of tea, serve their own vegetables, wash up, dust, whatever. Sadly this is often because the home is short staffed and staff do not have the time but in too many others it is just to much of a bother to make that time and I hear excuses like 'what's the point, they'll make a mess, they've got dementia, it's quicker if I do it' Those same staff will however always find time to go out for a cigarette several times during their shift. I know they need to get away but what I see is just plain silly. I have very little idea how you can motivate staff if they don't want to be motivated, you can send them on training courses, offer supervision, some homes have even gone down the dicipliniary route. I can only suggest you get a really inspirational trainer in or maybe keep diary of what you observe to try to make them see that there is a better way of working, one that takes account of what the resident wants. Good luck! Steadysue |
