Would you say being a carer/support worker is a skilled job ?

Dont you think it should be recognised as a skilled job?

What about pay?thats a joke

was looking on the jobcentre site this morning night carer £6,00 per hour day carer £ 5.80 per hour

what a joke i work in the community and get £6.00 hour i think thats a joke i dont get wear and tear on car or travelling time it takes me 1/2 hour to get to where i work..

do you think its about time we were recognised for the job we do especially once trained to l2/3

oh and what about this for a laugh i was told in april id get a 2% pay rise an extra 12p per hour told my manager where she could stick that

dont forget the 'no sick pay'!!! we dont get a bean, so can't afford to get sick.
i had that novo virus last week and had it really bad for 5 days. had to go back to work on the monday, even though my doctor told me to stay off for a further 5 days. would have loved to, but could'nt afford it.
i caught the damn bug of a client, as well.

That's strictly not true. You don't catch things from "clients". As for the working while you were sick you may of endangered lives. You should be aware that you are working with people who may have a poor immune system. You don't have access to the information ( Data Protection Act) .

As for the pay, here in Bradford ( i work for the council) pay is £6.42 an hour and time 1/2 on sat x2 on Sunday. I admit pay is poor but the standards of care have to improve there is no real "front" for care workers and its still seen at the "bottom of the barrel/ plastic nurse)

I cant agree for all. I think carers with long experience and qualification should have better pay than those who just start. In this way they will understand that its good to learn and have some qualification, also care standard will improve,as they will learn they will understand more as well.

I really love the work i do, the job satisfaction i get every day is imense, but the downfall in this line of work wether it be in community or residential is the rate of pay. I have gained my HNC and SVQ 3 in social care and have completed numerous care related training courses, outwith certificates on sign language, so you would think by studying hard and adhering to the standards set out by the care commision to provide the best quality of care to every service user, the knowledge and skills you work extremley hard to achieve would be recognised. BUT NO! WERE STILL GETTING A PATHETIC RATE OF PAY ANYTHING FROM £5.35 TO IF YOUR LUCKY £7 PHR. ITS A GOOD JOB WE DO IT, BECUASE WE REALLY DO CARE!

I have been in the care sector for 10 years now and it isn't a job you do for the money like others have said its a job you do cause your heart is in it. All this aside though i am seriously considering a change in career field not just because the pay is poor which lets all admit it is, i need start thinking of my future and on salary i am on don't see much of one.

I to also have my nvq 2 and 3 and really want to do a1 award and get into training but finding opportunity to do is it hard. I feel as carers we are often just the rubbish at the bottom of the pile that howi have always felt in my jobs, even though often we are the ones who know those we look after better than anyone else. We report things get things done but still lack alot of recogntion. I am not in the job fro recognition but once in a while it would be nice to be appreicated and not at those above you beckon call who think there title gives them a right to pass all crappy jobs to carers.

As you can see i am quite negative about my job role at present and its sad that after 10 years i have give my all to my jobs and am now considering a complete change !!

I totally agree, My mum works as a cleaner and is on better money then me.
I get so annoyed for what I have to lean and what i have to do and this week is even worse I have been slapped TWICE by the same resident who is in the EMI unit and she bite me on the arm too. I still have the bruise as proof.

I am finishing my NVQ2 and I want another job in the new year, now I would be happy to work in a shop.

Hey guys, dont like your job/pay? simple answer...do something else. Sorry sad but true.
I have been in this industry for 14 years and the biggest gripe i hear is wages. Seriously join the army.
You get paid a low wage because the social services dont want to pay for care at a high rate, its that simple.
I am an operations manager and I still make less than 22k, I dont complain because I like my job. I still do the care work and I get one weekend off in four. I work five days and I take calls because nobody wants to be on call either.
Really things only change because they get changed not because people sit around moaning.

I cant complain as a senior i get £10:20 per hour and a 30p nvq pay rise for nvq 3 and carers get £7.90 per hour plus a 20p pay rise for nvq 2.

Seinors who achieve nvq 4 go onto £11

I personally think as care workers we all have different skills i.e. you maybe faster at a drug round than me but im better at care plans, or person A is more task orientated than person B and its what makes a good care team a mix of skill and ability. I belive we ar epaid according to responsibility i.e. in the car ehome I work in carers are carers, we then have care helpers who help assisit with eating and drinking, commodes bed making tea round ect, and Senior Carers are responsible for administering medication doing care plans, running the shift and other responsibilites such as Fire, Infection Control. Walking round the home every morning to ensure it is how its shud be.

As being reconigsed for achievement I believe its down to the Home mangers to embrace the sucess of the home and show that through good praise.

We have a good manager who always sticks buy us and supports us and if we need extra things like equipment or extra staff to manage the dependancy within the home its there

And when you begin in Care work it isnt a Job it kinda becomes a vocation lol

Ayub Actually you can catch some illnesses from clients,
however this is a risk we take, but i do agree dallas would be endangering their lives working sick BUT and this is based on previous experience, as we all know there is no sick pay, and i myself have had to drag myself in to work with colds etc because the management basically bully if you do call in sick (its a no win situation) phone in sick get grief, go in sick risk giving to patients which i would hate to do but i cannot afford to be off sick or be bullied for being off. they don't care as long as the body count(carers) is there
