Hi im new to this,i was wondering if anyone can help ive got some questions im stuck on
One practical example of how i put this into practice in my job.
1.The rights and responsibilities individuals have for their own care and protection.
2.To be cared for in a way that meets their needs, takes account of their choices and also protects them.
3.Challenge discrimination.
Thanks in advance im a community support worker for the elderly

Hi Sue
Your assessor should be giving you some assistance with this.
A practical way,
This could be done as an observastion by your assessor, or you have they asked you to write a releftive account.

You treat them as individuals and find out about their needs, wishes and preferences. You respect their dignity, privacy, diversity, culture and values. ( following the care plan)

You support your service users to be as independent as possible and to make choices. ( you always offer them choices, such as what they would like to wear )

You seek help and advice to resolve problems in meeting their needs, wishes and preferences ( you ask your senior carer/manager for advice)

You take the appropriate action when behaviours and practice discriminate against individuals and ensure your clients know how to comment on their care. (say a collegue would not assist a service user because they did not agree with they religous beliefs, your collegue is showing discrimination, how would you deal with it, report it if you did not feel comfortable to challenge the person)

You seek and acquire information about, assessment of individuals in relation to danger, harm or abuse and the individual's preferences and abilities to deal with them. ( seek advice from your manager)

Your specific role in protecting the individual from harm and abuse and the procedures you have to follow including disclosure and reporting. ( following your reporting procedures)

You observe for signs that may indicate that individuals have been or are being harmed or abused or are in danger of harm or abuse.( inform your manager)

You respond to situations and behaviours in ways that avoid putting yourself or others at unnecessary risk and promptly alert the appropriate people and organisations if you discover or suspect that individuals or others are in danger. ( a service user needs to be transfered with a hoist, following a care review, the service user does not like being hoisted, and asks you not to use it on them...( whilst the service user has a choice, by carrying this choice out, you put the service user and yourself at risk of harm/danager)...you would explain to them why you need to use the hoist, but you would also report this back to your manager.

You record incidents and your actions in accordance with your organisations policy.

I have given you some examples, does this help

Hi sue66,

Examples

1 Mr X has a friend who you don't trust. You find out that the friend has stolen from Mr X before but Mr X forgave him. As Mr X is aware of the situation but still decides to remain friends with the man you respect his rights and his own responsibility for his own care and protection by not interfering.

2 As Mr X is vulnerable you do all that you can to ensure that he cannot be taken advantage of by this man again. You make sure that his valuables are safe and record any issues of concern etc.

3 A colleague says that at 83 Mr X can't be trusted to make sound decisions and should have someone to take care of his affairs. You challenge her for stereotyping him and discriminating because of his age.

Hope that helps

Aunty Sue
