Reality orientation tries to place the individual in the here and now and relies on the use of repertition to help the individuals memory by continually and repeatedly reminding them showing of the day, place, time and situation they are in. Every conversation should have a mention of time, day of the week or you could use a erasable memo board so information can be easily changed daily to remind individuals of the date.

Validation approach is a method of interacting with individuals in the later stages of dementia. It is a process that establishes trust and empathy for effective understanding, communication and relationships. The validation approach puts emphasis on the individuals emotional, social and psychological needs. Individuals in the later stages of dementia frequently exhibit abnormal, sometimes incomprehensible behaviour, they may think they are living in a different place or time or they may continuously repeat a physical gesture. This unconventional behaviour is an attempt to communicate and express their needs. By stepping into their shoes and seeing things through their eyes you are able to better understand the meaning of their behaviour. Individuals with dementia do and say things for a reason and validating their words and actions is a way of encouraging them to keep communication open.

Hope this helps.

Hello,
Identify some behaviour and then look at ways of dealing with it. Is it better to speak to person, touch them, distract them, engage them in activity, offer food, a bath, take them out? Do they need time alone, watching tv, listening to music. Then decide what works best and say what you found.
It is good if you use real examples from your own experience. Like the lady who becomes very anxious and non communicative who is calmed by giving her a battery operated cat that breathes and purrs.

The validation approach is the method of speaking with individuals in their later stages of dementia, this is a
progress that will establish trust and relationship. The validation approach will put emphasis on the
individual's emotions, social and psychological needs.
