Hi,
Answer
E.g. If you work with people with dementia you need to think about a situation that may cause confrontation
e.g. The person may want to walk around the building, and you need them to sit down for lunch but they are not happy about it and begin to object.
How can communication help to solve this situation?
Know their care plan details and understand how the person responds to different situations and triggers.
1. Keep calm, speak gently, use their preferred method of communication
2. It may be they are happy to sit somewhere else to eat
3. Maybe you could show them pictures of food to let them know what is happening
4. There may be another resident they like and would be happy to sit with
5. Leave them to walk around for a little while and come back later and support them to sit down
6. Ask a colleague for support and advice.
It is important that the situation does not build e.g. so the individual who does not want to sit down becomes angry.
1. They could eat later, they may not be hungry now
2. Another member of staff could approach them and invite them to eat
3. Finger foods could be used so they are not sat for long periods and can snack along the way
4. Report and record so that the individual's reactions are noted for other staff and to ensure they eat and drink sufficiently during the day.
This is just one example
