Would you say being a carer/support worker is a skilled job ?

Dont you think it should be recognised as a skilled job?

What about pay?thats a joke

was looking on the jobcentre site this morning night carer £6,00 per hour day carer £ 5.80 per hour

what a joke i work in the community and get £6.00 hour i think thats a joke i dont get wear and tear on car or travelling time it takes me 1/2 hour to get to where i work..

do you think its about time we were recognised for the job we do especially once trained to l2/3

oh and what about this for a laugh i was told in april id get a 2% pay rise an extra 12 pence per hour told my manager where she could stick that

yes i do think it's about time we were recognised. we work up in the north east, got my nvq's and am on £5.53 an hour, £3.50 for half hour and £2.08 for a 15 min call.
dont get car allowance etc.
i get really sick and tired of hearing everyone banging on about the poor nurses and they need more money, my foot!!!!!
this has been an issue with me for years. my company-we havn't had a pay rise for 3 years.
what it needs is every carer on here to start e-mailing their m.p's etc etc. we do need to be publicly recognised, until the mass public are aware we exist, what we do and for how much, we are going no where, and at the end of the day, where would the elderly and vulnerable be without us home carers and our collegues in the homes????
nuff said!

make me laugh when i break down what i earntaking in consideration car insurance etc im working for sweet f all.must be mad!!!!!!!!!!!!

could earn as much if stopped at home on dole but not that way inclined.

thats why im trying to better me education currently doing l3 in care was lookibg at social work they seem to get paid highly and judging by what some and i do quote some of them do is not a lot. the systems wrong we are the first point of call in most case for the elderly.

gp's , social workers, nurses, what they got to moan about we are the ones doing the hard work!!!!!!!!!!

o boy, you must be my soul mate!!! god, what a change to hear another carer with a bit of backbone, we are very few on the ground.
i don't know why we do it, well i do actually-- i like it plus im not much good at anything else.
funny you mentioning social work, i'm thinking of looking into the very same. i've done my nvq 3, gave up being a supervisor as i wasn't happy with some of the people they were finding off the streets to employ. and yes we are doing the work. we do quite alot of things now that are within the nurses remit. dunno, mate what will happen, crazy wages for hard working carers.
c'mon, rest of you guys, lets create public awareness!!!!!!

i must work for a good company then. the sfaff on the shop floor get £5.90 an hour or £6.00 an hour once they havel nvq level3. seniors get £6.60 an hour and i am a deputy i was on £8 an hour but in Jan 2008 was given a pay rise to £9.00 an hour thats a 12.5% pay rise. then to top it off i got a xmas bonus of £200. we dont get an actual car allowance but if we use our vehicles to take a client out we get 30p a mile for fuel. and if on call and called out we get an extra £15.
so its not all bad i think it depends on the company.
im half way through my RMA. wonder what wage that will be?;)

hi im new here but just wanted to agree with u all on the pay.i work in a res home and am a senior carer,i get 5.55 an hr for giving out meds, insulin injections, care plans, running the shift, and lots more besides.our last payrise was for 10p and our xmas bonus was a 5.00 tesco voucher!! i have been working in care for nearly 18 yrs, since i was 16.i love my job but think the pay is disgusing and every time we mention a pay rise we just get told""once the home is full it will be considered" we only have 2 bedrooms left but do they think we should go on thwe streets and drag people in,the bosses make it sound like they only run this buisness for the money.its about time someone realsied that its not just the nurses who need a pay rise.

i agree with the disgusting wages we are paid, i also got a voucher for xmas, and we get paid normal rate for all bank holidays including xmas day, i love my job which is why i do it, but i do think we should get higher pay, we all have to make a living as well

Hi Im new here but still feel i have to say something if thats ok. I have worked in a residentail home now for nearly 4 years and love my work. I work in Grimsby and thought we were one of the lowest paid areas but reading some of your messages maybe not. I am a carer and our pay is 5.64 to start 6.34 with NVQ 2 nothing extra for having 3 i am also a shift leader which i get an extra 50p and hour not sure what seniors are on. We get all bank hols at double time if we are working so really looking at all of you im not doing to bad. work is very busy having 55 residents to look after and only care staff on at anyone time by the way this is a great forum
