I did a Makaton course several years ago and it was great fun.
It depends what you need the course for. Makaton is mostly used by those working with people with learning disabilities to help to reinforce the spoken word. BSL is a full, signed, language for communication with and between deaf people. It's worthwhile to do either but it helps to have someone to practice with between sessions and to use it fairly regularly after the course - use it or loose it!

ive done both and i completely agree with aunty. you need to decide why you want to learn the skills. is it for work? or personal development.? makaton is loosely based on BSL. i made the mistake of learning them at the same time and boy that was confusing. some of the signs are the same and some are poles apart. when using makaton you sign with just key words for example "you" "drink" "what?" rather than to a person who comms with BSL "you want a drink of what?"
good luck in what ever you choose to do. and remember the best form of communication is a smile, it speaks a universal language.

Hi tom,
The news is not good! You probably will have to do it all over again. However if you had any of your units signed off by your assessor and IV and you still have the original unit summary sheets then the awarding body may accept this as proof that the unit was completed (a lesson for everyone here!)
The only other thing I can suggest is that you ask your assessor if s/he has copies of your direct obs or at least notes from them so that they can be rewritten. There's no fast way to complete except that you may find it easier the second time around!
You have my deepest sympathy. I have had candidates who lost their portfolios. One was left on a train, one was ruined in a car fire and one was destroyed by an irate ex husband!

Good luck!
