Hi

I have started assessing and I have taken over a candidate from another assessor, the candidate chose her optional units at her induction, with the help of her manager and her assessor, these were 214 218, however, all the residents are mobile and attend to their own personal care.
Can anyone help with any suggestions as to how I can get the evidence for 218 without bathing and toileting?

Regards
Gillian

Hi gilly,

Look at the Scope. The candidate could use individuals who are ill, who have changes in motivation for personal hygiene and grooming or changes in skin condition and so on.

It wasn't the most suitable option to choose but it could be done. If the candidate hasn't started it yet why not pick a different unit?

Hope that helps

Hi Gillian,

I start with a skills scan for this unit. Look at the criteria for each of the 4 mandatory units and, with your candidate assess her current skills and knowledge and decide what she needs to do to attain the skills required. You can write a Direct Obs for this.

Your candidate can write reflective accounts of a situation or piece of work she has done with an individual and say how well she feels she did or what she would do better next time. She could also write about how training undertaken has improved her practice or how she asks for feedback from individuals, key people etc.

You could ask her line manager to write a witness testimony of the candidates appraisal or ask to observe this.

These are just a few ideas to get you started but don't forget you can gather evidence for this unit as you work on others e.g. by asking her to include an evaluation of her practice in a reflective account for another unit or asking questions about how she felt she did after a direct observation. This shows that you work holistically.

Hope that helps

Hi Aunty Sue

You have been a great help but I am still struggling, I have read the scope for 218 but still dont see how I can get this evidence, does it mean, that I can gain evidence even if the candidate asks a resident if they would like to use the toilet? the residents suffer from mental health problems, and dont need any help with personal care this candidate is going to loose her funding if I change her unit, can you suggest anything?

Hi Gillian,

Your candidate could encourage individuals to say if and when when they want to bath or do they prefer to shower. He/she might prepare a bath for an individual or make sure that equipment and materials are set out for the individual to wash or shave. An individual might have a problem such as impetigo, your candidate plans and ensures that safe procedures are used. He/she checks that the bathroom and toilet are clean and cleared after use - this could be through encouraging the individual to do the clearing.

Your candidate doesn't need to actually wash or bath individuals he/she just needs to provide support and encouragement.

Hope that helps
