Hi Dave,
I told her what you said and she responded by saying she wanted me to understand the STANDARDS,I have sat here all day answering these questions, but I am just bogged down by it all?? Do you think that I am ready for the A1? Or am I kidding myself,I dont want to blag my way through, but it seems to me I need to know ALL these procedures BEFORE I can even make a start?? I even have someones folder, but I would rather not just COPY all the questions,is there something I am doing wrong?? Is there anything I should read further, look more closely at or am I just DUMB!!
Cheers for your help Dave

Hi Zoe

You are certainly NOT dumb. I'm an experienced assessor and some of those questions still make me think hard about what they are asking for.

Answering the questions will not help you understand the standards. The A1 standards are quite straightforward, giving you details of exactly what you need to supply.

Are you getting on ok with assessing your candidates in the hair salon?

You could just put your assessor off for a bit by saying you are still working on the questions, or ask her guidance on one or two of the more difficult ones like 27 & 32.

As I said before, concentrate on getting your two candidates settled into their portfolios and then you will be able to find most of the evidence you need for your own portfolio through what you have done with them.

Hope this helps.

Dave

Hi Dave,
Thanks ever so much for getting back to me,I have finished the questions now (apart from 2) and have realised that what I asked six months ago,I have just bought!! (a guide)
One of the questions did make me chuckle..... about my induction and mentor???? Where were they meant to be then? I have now had an induction, and the head of the A1 course is now my mentor/IV.
My candidates have both passed the units that I have picked, assessment plans were only implemented in the salon two weeks ago????? I never used them whilst doing my level 2 or 3 in this college????
Have still not attended a standardisation meeting??
Is there anyone I can speak to (appeals procedure) or something,as I am very unhappy with the way I have been treated in the college,I have paid out £600 and have been given a folder with some notes in..... not the cheapest course!!!!
And yes,hairdressing.
Regards

Hi Zoe

The way forward if you are not happy with the college, presumably you have tried to complain to your IV - as it happens, you should also have a trained assessor who should be countersigning all your documentation and, especially, your assessment decisions. Your IV cannot IV your candidates' portfolios and countersign your assessment decisions.

Ooops, lost my thread, the awarding body is the next step, City & Guilds, OCR whoever it may be.

Just to upset you, my A1 cost £48 as an evening class at my local college - but I did have to find my own candidates!

I find the whole process very frustrating. Are we not supposed to be empowering people? Helping people to gain a qualification by demystifying the NVQ criteria? Ah yes that is it ... we are being trained to decipher gobble de gloop. Hence the almost un-interpretable questions.

Hi Everyone

Im new to this so plse bare with me, I have just started the new A1 course which is now called TAQA and have only attended the 1st session of the 4 mandatory classroom based session for unit 1. Just been given my 1st piece of homework about rating methods of assessment and find that I can put some of the into more than one category so dont think I am understanding this fully at the moment.
I am a dental nurse who has just started as a trainee assessor for a company and has already been given a group of students to assess (more than 5). As i'm new to this you can imagine the panic which set in when I was given my contact logs for each student. I have been given very little information as to how to assess or where to start and as im only doing this part time at the min there is no time for me to observe a qualified assessor but they do have to countersign my work. So I went away and started to write a list of things I needed to ask re: Witess testimonies and how the working knowlege is collected (as i dont know if i have to do this or there tutor). I then made contact with my students and introduced myself and made them aware that I would be contacting them soon to do my 1st observation and explained what this would entail: basically that i will sit in the corner quietly and take notes then give written or verbal feedback on another day and chatted about starting a portfolio for there evidence, which they seemed happy about as I didnt want nothing heavy on our first contact. The next thing i'm intending to do is study my standards for both the NVQ3 and Diploma. Can anyone tell me if I am on the right track and any further advice on how to juggle students & complete my A1 (taqa) qualifcation as well as a full time job & a family any advise would be appreciated and any advice on general assessing would be great as I think from reading many of the forums, assessors seem to be thrown in at the deep end x
